Writings

The Hiking Humanitarian currently has two books published.  One was a printing of his doctoral dissertation by an academic publisher.  The other,  Systems out of Balance: How Misinformation Hurts the Middle Class, describes how our economic, political and cultural systems work and how misinformation throws them out of balance.  In particular, we are misinformed about who we really are.  The realization from this work that we are misinformed about who we are under natural conditions led to the Humanitarian Hike, the Believe in Humanity presentations across America and his upcoming book, The Five Forgotten Truths: Who You Really Are.  Other books in the works include:

The Power of Kindness across America
This will be the book produced from our American Discovery Trail journey, based on our encounters of people and communities extending kindness to their own, and to us.  This may be the start of a series based on future humanitarian hikes.

The Community Potluck Cookbook
Recipes for good food and vibrant communities, which come together over the traditional potluck.

Economics out of Balance: How Misinformation Hurts Community Economics
Derived from the Systems out of Balance work, this book will focus on how ten principles of misinformation have led us to “throw out the baby with the bathwater” by equating free markets with a corporate economy.

Politics out of Balance:  How Misinformation Hurts Community Politics
Derived from the Systems out of Balance work, this book will focus on how ten principles of misinformation have undermined federal government and steered us in the direction of national government.

Culture out of Balance:  How Misinformation Hurts Community Culture
Derived from the Systems out of Balance work, this book will focus on how ten principles of misinformation have undermined community through appeals to our vanity, cynicism and apprehension.

Systems out of Balance: How Misinformation Hurts America
The new edition of the original work will get away from class distinctions and focus on how economic, political and cultural systems are out of balance for everyone.

Idealism and the Tragedy of Trickle-down Belonging
Belonging to others is the key to our natural well-being.  This book will focus on how belonging to ideals, ideologies, idols, scholars or heroes undermines our well-being.

Materialism and the Tragedy of Growth
Species with social survival strategies live sustainably … until civilized humans came along.  This book will focus on how belonging to materialism and quantities of life has derailed us from immediate returns in the quality of life.

Individualism and the Tragedy of Indulgence
Hermits live independently of others, otherwise none of us are individuals.  This book focuses on the dangers of false individualism that amounts to being indulged by anonymous social structures without the necessity of social responsibility.

Civilized Dependency
We are heavily dependent on large, anonymous social organizations, from interest groups to corporations to nation states.  When we don’t have to look at the source of our dependency in the eye many fancy themselves independent or “self-made,” unaware of the indulgences and consequences from civilized addictions.

“Restoring Balance” features interesting and entertaining lyrics of economical, political, and cultural inclinations and if you are looking to hear something new and original with a Folk/Pop feel then take a listen.

The quirk factor is high here, landing The Bards of Balance somewhere in They Might Be Giants-meets-Mountain Goats territory.
