HUMANITARIAN CAUSES
The 5,000+ mile, year-long American Discovery Trail Humanitarian Hike helps out global causes related to Housing, Health and Hunger. A penny a mile pledged to your chosen cause means a donation of $50; ten cents a mile pledged means a donation of $500, and you will receive all the products produced from this journey, at the least two books and a video. Our goal is $25,000 for each of the three causes. To choose a cause for your donation, and to see how those donations will be applied, please refer to the descriptions below.

I’m glad to be serving on the our region’s board for Habitat for Humanity. This is a difficult area of the country for young families to find homes, even if they grew up here all their lives. Median housing costs for Litchfield County surpass $300,000. In contrast, we can make our homes available for $150,000 with no interest due, only sweat equity, thanks to the support we get from the tri-state region. If you are from this area please consider a donation that provides affordable housing for families in need. For more information about Habitat’s goals and strategies visit the Habitat for Humanity International web site.

LOCAL CAUSES: Lions Club International
The American Discovery Trail passes through San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento, Denver, Kansas City, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Washington, DC, and small town America in between. This provides the opportunity for collaborating with Lions Clubs to increase involvement in Housing, Health and Hunger across the country. Our goal is encourage Lions Clubs to do things WITH communities as well as FOR communities.
Lions Club International is the umbrella organization for the more than 45,000 local Lions Clubs spread out across the globe. While they have a focus on diabetes and health at the global level, the total spectrum of local humanitarian causes are as varied as the local Lions Club chapters themselves. For more information visit Lions Club International web site or use their Lions Club locator to find the nearest chapter.
